Jim Wold, "Executive Director"
of the"School" of Education
It's
important to note that Capella University is a for-profit BUSINESS,
and not a real "school" - that's why they probably refer to those
who manage their programs as "Executive Directors" - after all,
isn't that what Enron might also call their chief managers?!
It needs to be noted that Capella's "School of Education"
(is that an oxymoron?) was highly instrumental in the university's
decision to use WebCT (Capella's inaccessible online course room)
and yet they did not implement it first. Somehow, that reeks of
hypocrisy, don't you think? More information about WebCT may be
found on our sister site, Capella
University Sucks.
As documented on our abused students
page, Jim Wold was involved in the "discipline" of at least
two different students. Interestingly, one of those students
allegedly received twenty-seven (27) "incident reports" against
her. In addition, both Wold and Karen
Viechnicki, Capella's
Provost, "talked to the student." Isn't that nice?! As will be
noted elsewhere on this site, Karen
Viechnicki
not only REFUSED to talk to another student but that student never
received ANY "incident reports." Even so, Viechnicki ignored all
written university policies and helped to throw that student out
of the university.
Based upon the interview
of Jim Wold, received from the United
States Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights under the Freedom
of Information Act, we can't help but wonder if a bunch of homophobes run
Capella - in light of their discrimination against students with disabilities,
it wouldn't surprise us. What next Capella? Is racial discrimination your
next conquest?
Perhaps the most disturbing elements of Jim
Wold's interview are his comments
at the end of the document where he states that he,
"feels that issues that
[sic] students have with one another should never be posted in the
public forums. If a student has a problem, they should try to work it
out in private. Discussing the problem in the public forum leads to a
disruption of the course and puts people on the defensive because they
never know if their comments will offend someone and someone will start
attacking them in public."
It would certainly appear as if Jim's middle name might be "milk
toast"
(Mr. Milk Toast also has a nice ring to it). Hmmmmmmmm.... It would also
seem that Jim Wold, the illustrious "Executive
Director" of
the "School" of
Education, feels that the classroom is a public forum (hence, we've added
the term to our Capella-Speak page.)
Not only that, but for the "Executive Director" at any "university" to believe
that students learners should only spew pabulum and not engage in
discussions that could (and sometimes should) become heated is what we believe
a strong indicator of educational malpractice and incompetence.
